Don't Be Fooled By "bid It To Win It" Contractors

by Vickie Daeley

When it comes to redesigning our home, we are often tempted to do it ourselves or perhaps trust the skills of the lowest bidder for a particular construction project. But like the old adage states, you often "get what you pay for," and what you get is often not a high quality result.

Often we talk with people who have suffered from the curse of the low-bidding contractor. This is the contractor who assured he could finish on time for a low cost with a high quality finished product. But the end result was a disaster featuring sloppy workmanship or perhaps it could weeks longer than scheduled or maybe "hidden expenses" just happen to pop up. Whatever the problems, it is frustrating to spend your hard-earned money and be disappointed in the results.

There are several reasons why a contractor might present you with a bid that much lower than the other contractors. Obviously, the contractor wants the job but might not have the experience it takes to do truly exceptional work. Sometimes, the contractor doesn't have a valid license but hopes you'll ignore that fact in order to save money. Generally, you shouldn't see a huge difference in the bids coming in from contractors.

Redecorating or redesigning is always much easier if you hire a professional interior decorator and let them handle the details. Not only are they able to come up with a design vision you will love, they have the industry contacts to make this vision a reality. They already know and have working relationships with different types of licensed qualified contractors that you might need.

While you might be worried about the added expense of hiring a designer, it's a highly cost-effective move. After all, designers are trained to work within a budget; they know where to find the best products and furnishings for your home at the best prices. They also bring it all together correctly the first time, without making any costly mistakes. In the end, you can actually save money and definitely stress if you hire an interior designer.

So don't be fooled by the lowest bidder in the room. Often the money you save will be used to repair the shoddy work of the contractor. It's best to find a designer who can create functional, beautiful living spaces that truly last for many years and are worth every penny that you spent.
