Why A DIY Workbench Can Include Everything You Need

by Christa Jarvis

The thing that most people need, when they are just starting out on a hobby or want to work on their car or wood projects, is a work bench. They will need to place this in a space that can be left undisturbed for long periods of time. That may be a garage or basement, even a shed out back. The need for information about how to do this is very real. That is one of the reasons that DIY workbench plans and designs are a valuable item to obtain.

As you begin the process of building that important element of your work space, designing is the first thing to do. There are a lot of designs that can be obtained in friends work shops or on the Internet. Magazines will show some designs and many of these have been thought up due to their imagination and a willingness to try different things.

Sizes of benches can be just about any length. Some will be as big as the space will allow. Others will be smaller and just large enough for most of the projects the owner works on. They will be build from all sorts of material, including metal, plastic and especially wood. This bench can be painted in normal colors or whatever scrap paint you have around the place. They can also be stained, left natural or varnished.

Most people use wood to make their work benches. This is a material that can be cut easily and nailed or bolted together quickly. While you are working on a project, the drilling and cutting of other pieces will not do much except, maybe, make a hole or a slice. This will not interfere with the use or even the appearance in a wood top.

Many benches will have a top, sides and drawers for a host of tools and implements. Often a peg board is hung or attached to the wall to provide space for organization of tools and supplies. The drawers can be made from the same wooden material and can be mounted on sliders to allow for easy opening and shutting.

Other considerations that should be made in your designing, or those of any plans you acquire from someone else, is the height. Having it at the right distance from the floor, based on your dimensions, will make tasks performed on it easier to do. It should not be too low as this will impact your back. It should also not be too tall as this makes it difficult to use your hands.

The many ideas that can come to you about what your work bench should look like and what it should incorporate can be confusing. There are many designs and plans you can buy that will do a very good job about making these elements work together. The exploded views of these plans will help you see how it all works and the material lists will assist you in your shopping trip to the hardware or lumber store.

Identifying what types of features you need can help in picking out the best plans. Regardless of what your bench will be used for, it must have the space and features you need. You can design this item yourself and have everything there you need or you can shop for the plans and designs that have been tested by many others before you.
