This passive animal has a dual purpose. It is able to work and provide the owner with a smooth easy ride.<br />

The animal became very popular because of its smooth way of stepping and agility on rocky terrain. These horses are the result of breeding several different breeds. These breeds include the Canadian Pacer, Morgans, Thoroughbreds, Narragansett Pacers, and American Standardbred. Cross breeding these animals created a gait that later became known as the running walk.<br />

Because of its calm temperament and smooth easy step, this breed is a great for the family. In addition to being wonderful workers they are also impressive cutting horses. When using the running walk the animal can smoothly cover eight to ten miles in one hour. Although the running walk is similar to the gait of any horse, there is a difference in speed. This breed is able to travel faster because the rear feet glide over the tracks of the front hooves.<br />

The breed also nods its head in time to the tempo of its step. The also have an innate ability to perform other kinds of steps in addition to a running walk. These steps include the stepping pace, foxtrot, and pace. They are especially well known for the rocking chair canter which is the calm and relaxed way they gallop.<br />

The TWH can be bred with any breed. The animal is commonly fourteen to seventeen hands high, or 56 to 68 inches tall. In addition, they weigh from nine hundred to twelve hundred pounds. The colors and patterns of the horse vary. Some are black, palomino, or chestnut. They are also often seen with spotted patterns.<br />

These horses are preferred for the natural way they have of walking. The training methods used by owners and trainers are a humane way to develop their unique gait. No pain is inflicted during training to result in an exaggerated gait as it was in the past.<br />

Anyone who have been close to these animals will know that they are somewhat majestic. They have such a gentle temperament and their stride is so smooth they are perfect for riders of all ages. They are a good choice for families who enjoy riding. They are also very strong and be employed by the farmer and rancher. They also proved the owner with hours of comfortable riding enjoyment.<br />
