Here Is Information On Oil Rig Drill Bit

The efficiency and convenience of modern lifestyle rely on petroleum products that are extracted thousands of feet deep into the crust of the earth. This process involves drilling very deep wells into the surface of the earth to access oil deposits and other petroleum products. Very sophisticated methods and pieces of equipment are used in the drilling process. The drilling equipment is usually comprised of several parts and one of the most important components is the oil rig drill bit.

The components which do the actual cutting of soil and rocks in the drilling activity are called drill bits. These tools are made in such a way that they can cut through hard rocks and other materials in the ground to reach petroleum and gas. The bits are placed on the tip of drill string, right below the drilling pipe and collar.

Drills usually excavate by rotating. Some of the hardest materials on earth are used to make the cones of the bits. Bits usually have two or three cones. Tungsten carbide, diamond and steel are some of the materials used to make the cones. Both synthetic and natural diamonds can be used in making the cones. Cones cut through rocks and soil using the sharp teeth they have at their tips.

Two types of drilling exist, that is, percussion and rotary drilling. These two methods are different from each other in many ways. When using percussion method, the well is drilled by continuously lifting and dropping a huge weight at the rock or soil in the ground. On the other hand, the rocks at bed of the well are scrapped, cut, crushed and ground using a rotating mechanism in rotary drilling. Components of the drilling system include a prime mover, bits, drill collar, hoisting apparatus, rotating equipment and drilling fluid.

The prime mover provides all the power needed for the process to happen while the hoisting equipment is responsible for lifting the drilling pipe. The pipe is lifted to be inserted into or out of the well. The rotating equipment sets everything else in motion through rotary motion. Drilling fluid is needed to ensure that the drill string is buoyant during the process. The fluid also lubricates the process and carries chippings out of the well.

There are several types of drilling bits. Steel rotary bits are among the most common. The other kinds are insert bits which are made of steel with tungsten carbide inserts. Normally, polycrystalline diamond bits are compact bits attached onto carbide inserts which are made from synthetic diamonds.

The strongest bits are the diamond ones. They are 50 times stronger compared to steel bits. They are the best to drill through very hard surfaces. Different materials can be combined and used to make hybrid types of bits. Specific challenges in various drilling environments are handled using hybrid bits.

Also, there are different kinds of drilling designs which are used in order to achieve varying results. Some of the designs are fishtail bits, core bits, and mill bits. This bits have different uses in the drilling activity. The material in which the drilling bit is made from will determine its price.
