Reverse Osmosis is used to purify water by using a partially permeable membrane to remove large particles, unwanted molecules and ions from drinking water. The process can remove a number of types of biological, including bacterial, dissolved particles and suspended species from water. The membrane allows water to be processed into the cleanest potable water possible. While reverse osmosis was not perfected until the new millennium, Rental of Reverse Osmosis filtration systems in Canton Ohio is now as close as a phone call.

The process consists of using a natural process to move water and other solvents from a low solute concentrate to a higher level concentrate. The powerful force of the solvents on both sides of the membrane is what creates the osmotic pressure used to move the water. For, by using an external force to reverse the natural flow, the process and term reverse osmosis was born.

The process differs from filtration due to the fact that the fluid flows across a membrane. Whereas, the process is done through flow rather than straining or excluding negative chemicals and other materials from unfiltered or untreated water. In doing so, the process is believed to achieve perfect efficiency regardless of concentration or pressure.

Unlike filtration, the osmosis process involves diffusing solvents across a membrane which either uses a type of nano-filtration in which pores are so tiny most can not be seen or are non-porous. In all cases, the most important part of water filtration is the difference between solubility and diffusion. Although, unlike filtration, reverse osmosis can also be used to remove salt and other materials from seawater.

Jean-Antoine Nollet first observed the process in 1748. Although, over the course of the next few hundred years, the process was considered a phenomenon and only observed in laboratories. Then, in 1950, a professor at UCLA investigated and explored the desalination of seawater using similar membranes to those now used in reverse osmosis. After which, professors from the University Of California Los Angeles and University of Florida successfully developed clean and fresh drinking water from seawater.

Actually, it was not until 2001 that commercial products developed with the process became available in most areas. For, there were many modifications to the process before researchers and scientists could create the proper membranes and processing systems to make this possible.

While seawater was most often used in the laboratory, now reverse osmosis is being used to clean tap water in a number of areas. In addition, the process is also being used to clean a number of other solvents and solutions in different industrial complexes. As such, while being used initially to clean water, there are now a number of other purposes.

The process is currently being used in different countries around the world to provide clean drinking water to people in need. Whether in Flint, Michigan or a third world country, the process has now saved thousands of lives. In addition, water treated through the process and systems for at home processing are now providing what many perceive to be the cleanest and freshest water on the planet.
