Home Security Ideas that You Can do Yourself

If you are able, you should have a top of the line home alarm system installed in your home. It is a great investment, because they are so effective at lowering crime in the homes they are installed in. In fact, crooks themselves say that they are less likely to break into a house that has a burglar alarm.

But if you are on a tight budget, you may not have the funds needed to install a home security system in your house. You will be glad to know, though, that even if you can't put in a system, you can do many other things that can minimize the risks of being a victim of a home robbery.

And since a burglary occurs every fifteen seconds in the United States, any time and effort you spend improving the security of your home will be well worth it in the long run. Even if you are renting your home, you still need to do everything you can to prevent break-ins. It is still your personal belongings that are in danger.

Your doors are an important area to consider. If you have exterior doors that have a hollow core, you should get rid of them and instead install doors that are solid hardwood. Reinforced steel doors are also an excellent choice. Much of the time, criminals break in to a home through the door. By putting up strong doors rather than weak ones, a burglar will have a much harder time kicking it in.

The door frame is also important. No matter how strong your door is, if the frame is cheap, weak or rotten, a crook can still get in! Replace your door frame door jam with ones made of stainless steel or solid metal. While you are at it, put in a heavy duty strike plate as well. This will make it much harder to be kicked in.

Lastly, look around your house and take note of all the exterior doors that are next to windows. A burglar can break the window and reach in to unlock the door. In order to make this less of a danger, replace those door locks with double cylinder locks and dead bolts.
