Usually this means sending a letter expressing gratitude to them for interviewing you, then following up within a week to discover if there are any developments. If the phone interview happens during the last or intermediate step of the hiring process, then checking in is critical. But it is even more paramount if it is during the preliminary phases, or the screening process. Since the company is trying to filter through a large pool of applicants, you will be competing with many others. Sending a follow-up note immediately afterward will confirm that they remember you, and will distinguish you from other people as a responsible communicator.<br />

Whatever outcome you receive from your follow-up inquiries, stay professional and courteous. The business may reject your application or not send you to the next round of interviews. If this happens, thank them for the chance, and ask them to be in touch. Many times, the employer may not pick you for a particular position, but, if you have begun a bond with them, they may select you for another opportunity later. Though this may not happen, the company will be excited by your cordiality and it may create networking opportunities that will initiate future positions.
