Why Construction Accidents Are Completely Avoidable

by Bixby Brooks Oscarschmeld

Land boring is the result of the advance of modern technology as previously the tunnels and pits were dug either by hands or by dynamites for larger sites. But the huge problem with dynamite was that they have a habit destroying every single thing in the proximity of the working area thus, with the advancement of technology, modern boring machines were announced in the construction industry.

The OSHA statistics have also shown that 90% of the fatalities occur in four categories: being caught between objects, struck by objects, electrocution and falls. These statistics also show that these accidents are preventable and can be avoided with the proper safety training, precaution, and common sense. Construction work can indeed be dangerous. The line between a near miss and a fatality is thin. Even though the government will enforce safety and health laws and employers have an obligation to provide a safe and healthy workplace, it is still the worker's responsibility to stay safe and out of harm's way.

Some areas where there is a huge chance of accidents are with underground boring and the actual construction of the infrastructure. However, the dangers do not end when the building is complete. Additional safety measures must also be installed on the finished work like fire doors and such. It is up to the employer and the owner of the property to ensure the safety of the workers and the residents within the building.

A well-defined path is planned out for example; path would be outlined on the highway if a tunnel is being developed there. Once the path is marked, the machine is started which in turn starts drilling the earth with the cutting head to make a way through it. The boring machine makes the portions of earth pull back behind the blades, within the shields. In case that it loses dust and dirt, a boring machine with the capacity of soaking the bored earth with water to create mud is used. The boring machine is used till the time it reaches the other end after making the desired path, otherwise known as a tunnel on the marked out area.

While construction sites are always filled with danger, proper knowledge on safety rules and regulations can be the only thing protecting an individual from certain serious injuries.
