7-Step Plan Review (and One of My Own Big Goals)

The majority of people will tell that you need to write down your goals, and that is nice advice. That is only a tiny part of the big picture. You can't just list your goals; you have to do something with them. If you follow the first five steps, you're a goal setter. You become a goal DOER when you take action and then evaluate your progress to make sure you're on the right course. Now you're a goal doer and a goal-getter.

You have the recipe now, so there's no excuse why you cannot achieve anything. To review, here's the 7-Step Plan for accomplishing any goal and the key questions to ask yourself as you go along:

Step 1: Acquire a specific goal.

What do I want?

Step 2:Create a purpose for the goal to spark your passion.

Why do I want it?

Step 3: List others who can help you achieve your goal.

Whom could I learn from who has already achieved this goal? Who do I know who has the contacts that could help me, mentor me, or advise me?

Step 4:Create your plan using Future Perfect Planning.

Which steps should I take to reach my goal?

Step 5: Think of the possible obstacles and solutions for them.

Which roadblocks might arise and how do I overcome them?

Step 6: Take action now. Not tomorrow, not in six months, but now.

Which steps will I immediately start?

Step 7: Evaluate your progress and make any necessary adjustments.

Am I on target with my current plan?

Once you list your goals and begin following the plan, keep your goals with you and look at them each day. Read your goals when you wake up each morning, and read them again right before you go to bed. Since it takes 21 days to develop a new habit, repeat that process for at least 3 weeks. Get in the habit of programming your subconscious with what you want your mind to ascertain and then achieve.

Every now and then you have to set a goal that scares you-and I mean scares you. Set some realistic goals, but then set some crazy, outlandish goals that would shock the heck out of you if you achieved them. There are so many amazing things that began as unrealistic, crazy, outrageous goals. When Bill Gates said he was going to start a software company, his professor told him he was crazy and gave him an "F" on his paper. Was that an outrageous goal? Absolutely. However, look at him now. He is one of the richest men in the world and Microsoft is a household name. Sometimes it pays to dream big, so do not ever let anyone convince you that you cannot do something.

Like to hear about one of my crazy goals? I am going to make a major movie. Years ago, my sister passed away from a brain tumor, and I wrote about the experience in Chicken Soup for the Soul. My sister's death taught me the importance of family, and it showed me that you never know if today is the last day you will spend with a loved one. I plan to turn that story into a major motion picture that will inspire people to cherish and appreciate their families.
