Bad Effects Of Plastic

by Leslie Moore

Plastic is known to be a very versatile substance and it has benefited the lives of humans a lot. Different aspects of life have grown because of the existence of plastic. Science, medicine and different industries won't be as successful as they are right now if not because of the wonderful use of plastic. It has also played a big part when it comes to innovation of different kinds. After discussing about its many benefits, it won't escape the fact that plastic could be very harmful to the lives of people and environment for many ways.

Harmful Effects to Human Lives

There is no escape for everyone when it comes to the harmful effects of plastic. It can be a threat to people of all ages including infants and small kids. Toys that are made up of plastics can be toxic especially if those are cheaply made. Some parts of it can be swallowed by small children and this could lead to choking and death. Plastic bags can also impose a danger to your kids especially if you left them alone to play with it. They may have their heads trapped with it and it can result to suffocation. Make sure to see all of your kid's actions whenever they are playing with such dangerous stuff.

Plastics are made up of different chemicals which can be a threat to the health of humans. Some of those chemicals are BPA and phthalates, which disturbs the natural hormone levels. Men who are affected will have lowered testosterone levels while girls might have induced early puberty. Other chemicals can cause allergies on some individuals upon skin contact or if it has been digested. Some of the plastic products that contain harmful plastic chemicals are shower curtains, milk jugs and vinyl.

Negative Effects to the Environment

Majority of the environmental waste is composed of plastic. Usages of plastic became rampant and an evidence of this are discarded remains on streets, waterways and natural habitats. Pollution is one of its harmful effects and it has affected the environment a lot. That includes contamination of different bodies of water and air pollution. For plastic wastes that were able to reach the natural habitats, those might be eaten by wild animals which could cause them death.

Issues in landfill have been the problem of many governments. Since plastics have nowhere to go and it won't decompose that easily, landfills can be very full of it that in time, there will be not enough space for other kinds of wastes. From landfills, plastics and its chemicals might find its way to the water ways where we are getting our drinking water. This will cause contamination that people would have to stop from drinking the water coming from it until the root cause was found or you have moved to a different location.
