How Web Marketers Must Handle Criticism

by Alannah Fenner

It's actually a myth that a company can be 100% loved and adored. This is true both online and off of it. It doesn't matter how good your business is, you're always going to have to deal with critics.

It's exactly how you address the criticism when you find it that matters. As an Internet based business owner you don't have any face to face interaction to help contradict negative text about you so this is especially true. These are the things you need to do.

Reply to any kind of criticism you see without delay. You should not underestimate how crucial this is. You do not want to merely let a bad critique sit somewhere without addressing it. If the critique was left in a public discussion board, leave a response on the same thread thanking the person for his or her opinions.

Write out you are checking out things and then ask the person for permission to continue talking about the matter in private. This offers proof that your main priority is the development of the very best possible product and that you can take critique well. It will earn you a lot of respect.

Actually determine if the feedback is about something that should be resolved. People can easily tell the difference between trolls and honest feedback. "You suck" doesn't justify your response.

It's important, though, to take a look at things including "the format is wonky" or "there is a 404 page where the about page needs to be." Take a look at everything and if something really does need to be changed or fixed, change or correct it. This proves to others that you're paying attention and will do something when action is required.

Each response you offer must be customized. Should you opt to make a change or a fix, tell the one who published the criticism that you are making the changes they requested you to make. You may also post things such as this publicly in discussion boards.

This shows that you don't merely get mad when another person criticizes you. It also shows them that you will work as hard as you have to work to give them what they want. This is a fantastic idea--even when you decide not to make a change that has been requested. Say that you considered it but chose to leave things as they are. Then talk about the reason you did that.

Reputation management is the name of the game when you respond to feedback; don't forget that. If you merely criticize someone for criticizing you, you appear dumb. If you dismiss criticism and just keep insisting that everything is okay, you are going to look like you don't know your business well.

Keep your vanity in check. People are not attacking you as an individual (hopefully). They just had a less than good experience with your product. You have to make your product better so they are not going to have the same experience later.

How you address criticism tells people a lot about both you and the business you are running. Make an effort to be as positive as you can about it!
