A Guide To Construction Equipment For Projects

by Victor Kavlotsky

Different types of construction work call for different types of construction equipment for projects. Constructing a highway requires different plant from constructing a skyscraper. Building homes in California, which is prone to regular earthquakes, requires different tools from building homes in Oklahoma, Texas and other states in Tornado Alley. Still other approaches are needed for erecting residential neighborhoods along the Atlantic coast, which is vulnerable to hurricanes.

Connecting Calais, on the northern coast of France, with Dover, on the east coast of England, is the Channel Tunnel, built in 1994. The undersea portion is the longest under water tunnel in the world. It took 13,000 workers to build it over a five-year period. No fewer than 11 tunnel boring machines were employed. The combined weight of this equipment was more than 12,000 tonnes, about 1,000 tonnes more than the Eiffel Tower.

The tonnage of assorted mud and rocks that were excavated from beneath the channel was transported to a location near the town of Dover. This area is now called Samphire Hoe, after a green vegetable that has become something of a delicacy in southeast England. As a result, the English land mass grew by ninety acres, an area 25 percent the size of Regents Park, one of London's major park areas. The tunnel is 31 miles in length; of this, 24 miles are under water.

The eleven boring machines dug a tunnel length of 250 feet per day, the equivalent of two football fields. The entire volume of spoil removed from the seabed would be enough to fill 13 Wembley Stadiums. Some organizations consider the Channel Tunnel to be one of the seven wonders of the modern world. There are actually three separate tunnels, two to carry trains each way under the sea and a third tunnel dedicated to service and repairs.

The trains that take passengers, cars and cargo are 775 meters in length. This is the equivalent of eight soccer fields. If every car that had ever traveled through the Channel Tunnel were placed end to end on top of each other, we would be able to climb them all the way to the Moon. This distance is equal to approximately 250,000 miles.

Since 1994, approximately 280 million people have been crossed beneath the sea. This is four times the combined population of the United Kingdom, which is 70 million people.

One of the 580-tonne drill that were used to dig the tunnel was auctioned on eBay in 2004. It sold for more than sixty thousand bucks. The main construction equipment for projects used to construct the Channel Tunnel were 11 giant tunnel boring machines.
