Buying Carpet: The Different Types & Styles

by Suzanne Herrman

There are many reasons why people enjoy having carpeting installed in their home. Carpeting adds warmth and ambiance to a room and is softer for children and pets. If you are in the market for some new carpeting, here is information about different types of carpeting and which type might be best for you.

Carpeting, like most other types of flooring, isn't inexpensive, and to get your money's worth, you definitely want to find the best possible carpet that will fit within your budget. Wool is a highly durable choice, but this natural fiber comes with a higher price tag. Nylon is a less expensive option and although it can be easy to stain, many nylon carpets are treated so that they are stain resistant. Nylon is highly durable, though, when it comes to rooms with high traffic so it can be an excellent choice.

There are several other materials used to make carpeting, and polyester is one common material that is used. While polyester is already fairly stain resistant, most polyester carpeting is further treated so that it will be even more resistant to stains. This might be a good choice in rooms where you entertain frequently or where children are likely to spill.

Aside from the materials, there are many different styles of carpeting to consider. In general, there are cut pile carpets and loop pile carpets. This just means that the ends have been cut or are looped. Sometimes you will find a combination of both cut and loop. The cut pile carpets include Saxony, textured Saxony and Frieze, the latter of these three also is known as shag carpeting which has seen a bit of resurgence since its heyday in the 1970s. This can be a good option for child's room or playroom, but you do need to have a heavy-duty type of vacuum for shag carpets. The loop pile carpeting typically has a bit more texture and also tends to be more durable that cut pile.

It is wise to think about a few realities prior to purchasing carpet. You need to think about the room traffic and the probability of stains as well as your budget and the style of your room and furnishings. People with different lifestyles tend to choose different types of carpet. For instance, for a couple without kids or animals, the choice will differ from a family that has a dog and three children.

Once you have your carpet installed, you need to keep it as clean in order to make it last as long as possible. Weekly vacuuming is good, although some rooms really could use two vacuums each week. Professional Baton Rouge carpet cleaners, Denham Spring carpet cleaners or perhaps a Prairieville carpet cleaning company need to be hired at least once a year for a good deep cleaning. Different types of carpeting need different types of cleaning, which is one reason it is wise to hire an expert. If you do have pets, kids, allergies or breathing issues, it is wise to professional clean carpeting about every six months.
