What To Do If Your AC Is Working But Not Blowing Cold Air

by Manda Plotzker

If it is raining out and the humidity is rising along with the heat there is a good possibility that your air conditioning unit can ice up. When it does your home will heat up quickly. The common misconception is that when your air conditioner is already running to turn the thermostat colder. When your AC is allowed to run low on refrigerant it can cause the compressor to gring much like a car that is low on oil. It will do this until one day it will just over heat and those metal shavings cause from grinding clog up the system and seize up the compressor.

The blower fan that that is inside your air conditioning can sometimes slow in its revolutions. This is caused by a number of things such as dust and lint build up on the bearings or just wearing out over time. In either case, if the motor is still working, this can be easy to miss diagnose. Your AC was designed to have a certain volume of air blown across the coils.

Your unit should be turned off and unplugged during this part. If you choose to actually wash the fins or hose them down that is okay too, but be sure to unplug your unit. It is also important that you change the filter every six months. It's a good idea to have your unit maintained by a service professional before cooling season starts every year. This can catch big problem before they start.

High humidity reveals this problem at it's worst. Be careful not to just disregard this issue. Chance are you are loosing up to 35% of your air conditioner's efficiency resulting in a higher than needed power bill.

Too often inexperienced AC technicians will skip the proper diagnoses of the AC and assume it is low refrigerant.
