Stain Removal: How To Preserve Your Carpeting

If you have carpet, chances are that sometimes food, drink or other substances get spilled on these fibers. Some stains are simple to remove, but others can be quite difficult to remove. It is important to understand the following facts before you start to remove a particularly difficult stain.

No matter what type of stain you have, there are two constant stain removal tips. The first is that you need to act as quickly as possible and the second is that you need to be gentle with your carpet. Always blot and never rub at a stain. Not only does this cause damage to the carpet fibers, it also pushes the liquid into the padding, which you definitely do not want. Quite a few stains can be removed by blotting up the liquid, rinsing with cold water and then blotting up the excess water. Use papers towels or a clean cloth, preferably white, to blot up the stain and water rinse.

Many carpet cleaning commercials demonstrate their product by its ability to clean up red wine. This is because red wine is so noticeable, but also because it is something that often gets spilled on carpet. Cleaning this liquid is not as difficult as you might think. Blot up the wine as best you can, working from the outside in. Then rinse the spot with cold water, cold club soda or even chilled white wine, which has been shown to remove the red wine stain.
Wax might seem like an impossible substance to remove from your carpeting, but if a candle drips all over the carpet fibers, all is not lost. First you need to freeze the wax by placing a bag of ice on top of the wax. Be sure that the bag is entirely waterproof as moisture on the carpet will inhibit the freezing of the wax. Once it is frozen, grab your dull butter knife and scrape away at the wax gently. This should remove most of the problem, and for what remains, you'll need an iron and paper bag or paper towels. Place the bag or towels over the wax, turn the iron on to a warm setting and rub. The wax will melt and stick to the bag and presto, the wax is off of your carpet. If a stain remains from a colored candle, treat the stain with water, soapy water or a carpet cleaning solution.
Dog and cat urine is something that most pet owners have to deal with from time to time, especially with a puppy, kitten or an older animal. Begin by blotting up as much urine as possible, and then place a damp pad of paper towels or a clean damp cloth on top of the stain. Weight it down heavily and let it sit for approximately 10 minutes. Then blot up the liquid, and dilute the stain with water and spray on an enzymatic cleaner to rid the fibers of the urine smell. You can blot the liquid until the carpet is dry or even reapply the damp paper towels and weights overnight to truly allow the cleaner to work its magic. In the morning, the stain should be gone, as well as the smell.
If you are truly nervous about handling a bad stain, consider calling in the experts. Your Prairieville carpet cleaners, Baton Rouge carpet cleaners or a Denham Springs carpet cleaning service probably can help with just about any stain or offer you some sound advice. In addition to getting rid of stains, professional carpet cleaners also remove all the dirt, dust mites, fungi, mold and other toxic elements from your carpet every time they clean. It is recommended that you schedule service every six months to keep your carpet as fresh as possible.
