The process of metallization is done inside a special unit called a vacuum chamber. Temperatures inside a vacuum chamber are usually higher than the boiling point of the metal being metalized. Upon attaining the boiling point, the metal evaporates and fumes are formed in the chamber. As the fumes cool down, they form a uniform deposit over the substrate. Generally, objects being metalized are called substrates. The deposit is thin and deposited uniformly over the substrate.<br />

A substrate being worked on may be hot or cold depending on what version of metalizing is in use. The essence of warming in certain cases is to strengthen the bond between substrates and metal films. Strong bonds enhance durability.<br />

Metalizing finds application in almost all industries ranging from the military to electronics and household equipment. In electronics, the technique is useful for many purposes such as production of surface coatings that offer protection from signal interference. Electronic devices need to be protected from interferences such as electrical noise, radio frequency interference, and electromagnetic interference within their environment. Some among the devices that need protection include antennas and computers.<br />

Coatings applied can also serve a protective function. In environments where corrosion is likely to occur, devices and surfaces may need to be protected by depositing a layer of protective material over them. The protective layer comes in form of a film of metal applied through metallization. Some examples of applications include ship bases, which need from being corroded by water.<br />

Another function that metallization does is to enhance the aesthetic value of objects. Coating beautiful metals like gold on surfaces like plastic that would otherwise not be so beautiful makes them look like gold. The same thing goes for aluminum. Finally, durability of metalized surfaces is enhanced greatly.<br />
