Sealcoat refers to a thin layer of black material that is applied to pavement surfaces. It is also referred to using the name sealant. It is often used to improve the aesthetic value of old asphalt, but its chemical composition may be harmful to both the environment and human beings. The substance comes in the form of bituminous liquid mixture. When in need of companies that do sealcoating OR is the right location to check out.

Sealcoat comes in three major types, that is, asphalt-based, acrylics, and coal tar-based sealcoat. The finish produced by asphalt-based and coal tar-based sealcoats on pavements and driveways has a deep black color. When comparing the safety levels, asphalt-based sealcoat is safer and less harmful to animals and the environment. Coal tar-based sealcoat has a higher content of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, which are harmful to the environment and pose the risk of cancer in human beings.
This material is used heavily in high-friction surfaces. It serves several purposes on such surfaces. First, it offers a protective layer to surfaces to prevent them from reacting with gasoline, automobile oil and other petroleum products. Further damage and reaction is temporarily halted until when the layer wears off.

Sealcoats are not the same crack-filling agents and as such should not be employed in filling cracks on roads. In fact, they should only be applied cracks have been properly sealed using appropriate crack-filling agents. Sealcoats also serve as anti-skid agents. They offer friction which prevents skidding and slipping in vehicles and people in that order.

The substance needs to be applied regularly after every few years so that the coverage remains even. There are several factors that lead to eventual wearing off of the sealcoat over time. Some of them include snow shoveling, snow plowing, rain, wind, and friction from traffic. The wearing happens faster in areas of the road where traffic is higher. The frequency at which reapplication needs to be done depends on how fast wear occurs.

As the sealcoat wears off surfaces, it ends up in various water bodies such as lakes, ponds, and rivers. There, it may negatively affect aquatic life or even end up in the ecosystem in some cases. Flakes of the sealcoat may also be blown into other places like lawns and homes. Flakes that end up in homes are very dangerous because they increase interior PAH levels and people inhale the dangerous fumes.

Various methods are used to apply the substance onto surfaces. Some of the methods in common use include use of squeegees to apply by hand, use of self-propelled squeegee machines, and use of pressurized spray equipment. Continuous agitation is required in the machine for it to be able to maintain consistency of sealcoat mix.

The coat is applied in two layers, with some hours allowed between the two applications. A period of 24-48 hours of curing is needed before vehicles can be allowed to pass on the surface. The surface has to be cleaned and dried completely before the application is done.
