The Dangers of Office Work

by Leonard Joghnson

It may be surprising to learn of the damage office workers can cause to their body during their working life. What seems like a comfortable job in a warm office can have a deceivingly bad impact on the human body. Many aspects can impact an office workers health, their sitting pose can have an impact on their posture, the dust can lead to lung and dermatological problems and the artificial lighting can lead to sight damage.

Despite the health risks, office jobs continue to be a growing employment opportunity. Many businesses from banks to economists require the support of an office to run their business. As a result, it is believed that 50% of employed people work in an office.

Doctors are continually seeing office workers regarding a health problem that has risen directly from their office working environment. Approximately 35% of office employees have complained to a health professional regarding a problem which has been caused by office work and this figure is set to rise.

Computers are also very straining on workers, yet they are considered a fundamental aspect of office work. Staring at a screen can be extremely damaging to an employee's eyesight in particular for long periods of time. However it can be difficult to see an office job without the constant use of a computer due to the high number of services a PC can offer. Regular rest-breaks from a computer are recommended yet are rarely taken.

As an office job usually involves sitting in one position motionless for most of the day, obesity is also a huge issue. Sitting still for long periods of time will encourage weight gain. In addition, with commuting methods becoming more advanced, even the morning journey to work can be physical activity free.

Exercise is the single most important thing an office worker can do to improve their health and particularly to avoid obesity. Small changes like walking to work instead of taking the bus can make a huge impact on the body. Also look up local exercise classes, as often these are run early morning or late evening to fit in with and encourage office workers. Exercise increases blood flow, burns calories and has countless other beneficial effects on a body. Office employees often complain that they do not have the time to exercise, however exercising little and often in your free time will give your health a huge boost.

Sitting in the correct position with a good posture will help avoid neck, shoulder and back pain. However, often offices are a stressful and busy place to work and workers are often preoccupied and forget to pay attention to their posture. As a result pain is a common health complaint along with headaches.

To stop such health problems, you can split your day up with a small amount of physical exercise. Why not do ten sit ups twice a day? By doing this you will be breaking the position that your body has been put in and will increase blood flow around the body - you will be surprised at the good impact it can have. Similarly stretching your muscles regularly can prevent neck and shoulder pain; try rotating your head round and round and then from side to side.

If you are unsure what posture an office worker should adapt, sit how a pianist would sit. Pianists keep their back and neck in line and straight, their hands are gentle and relaxed and movements are gentle.
