General Information On Reclaimed Wood Flooring

Reclaimed wood flooring refers to flooring that incorporates reclaimed lumber, which is processed wood that has been retrieved from its initial application for other uses. This might also be considered a type of sustainable flooring because it utilizes old materials in a new way. These floors are expected to differ in many respects.

There are a lot of reasons why this kind of material is employed. The wood is known for having a unique look, which is a trait that many people are in search of when customizing their properties. Furthermore, it contribute to green building. This is because it utilizes items that already exist rather than cutting new pieces and taken from the environment. It is essentially a form of upcycling. The history of the lumber might be of interest to the buyer, as these pieces come from many different places. People also like this type of lumber because of its physical traits, including strength, stability and durability.

This type of flooring is known for having an increased strength. This is attributed to the lack of air pollution that was present before the twentieth century. Furthermore, the materials often has been harvested from virgin growth timber in which allowed the trees hundreds of years to grow before being cut down by humans.

Reclaimed materials may come from coal mines, warehouses, wine barrels and boxcars. Those who use these may be eligible to receive LEED certification. Leadership in Energy and Environment Design, LEED, is a rating system used to assess design, operation, maintenance and construction of green homes, building and neighborhoods. As these materials are considered recycled, they fit with the Materials and Resources guidelines for certification.

The industry started getting recognition on the West Coast in the 1980s, a time when softwoods were being reused on a larger scale. The industry was also concerned with the environment and the decrease in new wood. On the East Coast, sellers had started stocking up on reclaimed materials since the 1970s. However, this industry did not grow until the 1990s, when waste disposal was on the rise and deconstruction was becoming the option over demolition.

These materials have become so popular that they may be more difficult to find nowadays. The high demand has led some sellers to try to pass new wood for antique. It is also quite common for species to be incorrectly identified because it is hard to tell the difference between older material unless it has been opened and examined, which would leave the material looking less than desirable.

In some cases, this lumber has metal pieces embedded within it, such as broken nails. Therefore, milling the material may lead to damage of tools, such as saw blades, moulder knives and planer knives. It can be tedious and costly to have all the metal removed from the lumber, but nail-compatible saw blades are an option. Many providers of this lumber cannot verify how the lumber has been treated throughout its lifetime. This often leads to fears of offgassing.
Reclaimed wood flooring is the top choice for a lot of property owners. These materials are considered green because they have been recycled and reused. Floors of this sort usually have a one-of-a-kind look.
