Why It Is That The Best Workbench Plans Is The Most Important Thing

by Christa Jarvis

When you are looking into the art of wood working or other hobby, you need to have something to work on. The use of your kitchen table for this work can not last long enough and a solid surface that can be left alone is appropriate. You can design one yourself, however, it is often easier to get a set of workbench plans that will fit the bill.

As you begin the task of designing your bench, there are a lot of options. You want to discover what you want it to look like. It should probably be more than a flat surface and nothing else. This will work for some people, however, you want it to handle all of the many tasks you are asking from it. It should actually be a work station that can adapt as needed.

What it will be built out of is a major concern. The weight of the projects you will be working on will determine the construction. Rebuilding a car engine will need a stronger than normal construction, however, working on model cars will not need such a bulky structure. Other materials are metal, extruded plastic pieces and fiberglass material. Cost and availability will be a factor.

A good concern is the height of the working surface. If it is too high, you have problems of getting your hands everywhere they are needed. If it is too low, you are doing too much bending and that is bad on your back. Making it about the height of your waist is a good recommendation and you can go from there.

Your bench may have a few other things that can help you greatly. A clamp is good for many things. It can be installed on any side, in the back or on the front. It can also be installed, with bolts, on the top. It can be made from wood or one purchased from the hardware store. You may not need this for model building, but you will definitely need it for wood working or jewelry building.

The inclusion of drawers is always helpful. Tools and supplies can be stored away, especially if you do not use them all of the time. They can be mounted on sliders that will allow them to be pulled out and shut easily regardless of the weight they contain. Plan for this in your designs.

Making sure you have a work bench that is designed just the way you want it can be accomplished by purchasing the plans from a company who designs them. These pieces are designed, built and tested to make sure they work the right way. There will be material lists with measurements, exploded views of the bench and step by step instructions.

Trial and error is not the way to start your hobby. The designs you can get will be helpful as they are already used in many other shops across the country. You will be able to take the plans and make adjustments, such as lengths, heights and even depth to make them fit the space you have available.
