Different Types Of Sports Mouthguards For Kids

There are often accidents and bumps while playing school sporting events. States often have rules that require students to wear sports mouthguards. Several types can be selected depending on what the student needs. Regardless of the type chosen, the device should fit well, be comfortable, and be cleaned regularly. Neither speech nor breathing should be restricted when wearing them in sporting events.

The device should fit without being uncomfortable. They come in many different sizes, so you should take the time to get the size that fits your mouth and jaw shape the best. If they're too big or too small they can be restrictive or painful after time. Those that are too small could easily fall out while you're on the field.

The stock is the most basic type. This one cannot be made for a perfect fit because it is not made to mold to your mouth. However, the right size will provide the needed protection. It should easily fit over your teeth and not fall out. They usually don't have a way to be restrained in the mouth so you'll have to bite down on them the whole time it is in use.

Another type is the boil and bite. This is the most often chosen because it fits well but is not as expensive as custom made devices. The material softens when you boil it. When it is cool enough, you place it correctly in your mouth and bite down hard for several minutes. This allows the material to form to the impression of your teeth, making it fit better when it's in your mouth. Using this type is usually more comfortable and will stay in place during play.

The custom guards are made for students with braces or other dental devices. When they're made, they are formed with a mold of your mouth. This gives them the best fit and comfort of the three types. Those with braces may also get one for the bottom teeth to protect the expensive dental work from being damaged in sports.

It is important to take out any retainers or non-fixed dental devices. Since these are not permanently fixed in your mouth, they should be taken out before wearing the guards. If not, the device won't fit correctly and the dental equipment may break inside your mouth. If you have dental equipment it is a good idea to consult your dentist or other professional for additional information on the proper way to safely enjoy sports.

A crucial part of owning these is proper care. They need to be kept away from dogs and cats to prevent them from being chewed up. They should also be washed every day using a toothbrush just like when you brush your teeth. This prevents bacteria from forming which could cause other issues with your teeth and gums. Some will come with their own storage container, if not, store them in a cool dry place away from the sun.

Enjoying sports is a past-time that kids and adults enjoy all over the world. Having the right protective gear is an important part of enjoying play safely. Mouth protection should be taken seriously for contact sports to make sure you don't hurt your teeth or to prevent other injuries.
