The Excitement Of Offshore Catering Jobs

by Alison Wilcox

There are many people looking for offshore catering jobs opposed to the normal chef jobs that you would do in a conventional restaurant or hotel. There is something different about this, which makes it stand out and it will provide you with an opportunity of a lifetime. This will be something that you won't forget about in a hurry.

This kind of job is not for any kind of chef. Just because you do an excellent job as a head chef at a restaurant on the land, does not mean you will cope on a five star cruise ship. It is a different ball game and you have to cope with conditions which are very different. First of all there are practical issues to deal with.

Some people head off to the oceans because they think this is a vacation, only to find that this is definitely not true. This especially applies if you are working on a cruise ship which consists of long hours. You may only four hours of sleep every night, so there is no time to socialize with guests. You can't lie next to the swimming pool or go dancing in the night club.

You can also do more basic cooking which does not involve fine dining. Examples of this could include an oil rig or a vessel which consists of people in the navy. You basically just have to cook meals that will fill men and women up. People are happy as long as the food is good and you will be popular if you make good food and plenty of it. There are also ships that go on missions to third world countries. You could offer assistance on these and you will find them to be very rewarding.

This is not a time to socialize with the guess, so you can't think of going to the night club or the swimming pool for a quick dip. During your break your may just want to get some sleep because you may find that it is only three hours long. Not everyone can cope with this, but those that do find that there are many rewards to look forward to.

You have to make sure that you have all of the ingredients and that everything is free. This is all important when you are cooking at sea. You may be the only chef and you have to plan all of the menus. You have to check if there are any allergies. Sometimes you will find that children will need separate menus, so these are some of the things to think about.

There are lots of jobs around for this type of work because people are always traveling by boat, cruise ship or other type of vessel on the sea. They need someone to do the cooking. At first you will find it tough going, but like anything else you will soon get used to it.

You have to remember that offshore catering is not a walk in the park, but you will have benefits as well and this is definitely something that will make it worthwhile. You will learn a lot during this time, such as dealing with people in a close work space. You will also learn about ordering because once you are out in the open, you can't turn back.
