Exactly what does financial freedom mean to you? It looks a bit different for everybody. To me, financial freedom suggests being able to get up every day and not worry if I will be able to pay my bills. It means not having to wonder if I will have the money for the mortgage or if I'll be able to keep on the lights. Defining what financial freedom means to you is the very first step towards getting there. After all, if you do not define what financial freedom means to you, how will you ever know if you ever attain it?<br />

Being financially free is not the same thing as being rich. The word "rich" is a meaningless word. I know people who seem rich because they live in enormous houses, but with enormous houses come big mortgages. I also know individuals who drive fancy vehicles, but yet they can't pay the rent each month on their apartments. I'd like to see what is going on behind the curtain. Being rich is an illusion. You can make the world believe whatever you want them to believe with what you drive or where you live, but that doesn't mean you have attained financial freedom.<br />

When I was a full-time financial consultant, people came to see me who wanted to start investing their money. My first question was always exactly the same: "Why do you want to invest this money?" Often times, the response was something like this. "Well, my best friend has investments. It just seems like the thing to do."<br />
<br />
As I started to dig deeper into their finances, I discovered they had eighty or ninety thousand dollars in credit card debt-at fourteen percent interest or more-and ten-year-old school loans at ten percent interest. The most they could make from a typical bond or stock investment might be seven or eight percent. Does this math add up to you? By investing their money at seven percent rather than paying off their debt at fourteen percent interest, they would be losing seven percent. They just did not get it. They thought that because they had "investments" that meant they were making money.<br />

Before you conform to the social pressures of having that large house or making the right investment, you must define what financial freedom means to you. That will probably require you to live beneath your means in order to get there. I learned this lesson at an early age from my wealthy cousin named William Malinchak, who grew up in the same small steel mill town of Monessen, Pennsylvania that I did.<br />

William started passing wealth secrets down to me when I was still a boy. He did not just tell me what to do; he led by example. He brought me to his home in New York City and took me down to the commodities exchange where he created his wealth. Then he taught me about commodities and how to make money and then keep it.<br />
<br />
Even more powerful than his words, he coached me by how he lived his life. My cousin was so rich that he could purchase anything he desired. If he wanted a million dollar penthouse or his very own helicopter, he could have afforded it. That's not what financial freedom meant to him. He lived beneath his means and never accrued debt. That's what I call leading by example. You don't have to be a multi-millionaire to adopt this mindset and create financial freedom. I don't care how much money you make. It comes down to mindset, and it begins with defining what financial freedom means to you. That's the foundation you upon which to build your wealth.<br />
