Big machines are designed to do big jobs. There are lots of tools available for smaller jobs, but the big ones would take too long without the larger equipment. Using these machines requires special training and ability because they can work through the job quickly, but also do an enormous amount of damage if not handled properly. A good driver is able to get a bucket or hammer in exactly the right place every time and finish the job with delicacy. Having the right excavator attachments are needed to do the job correctly and efficiently.

When you want to dig a hole, use an auger. These are most often owned by utility and excavating companies. They use them to dig vertical holes for putting in electric posts. However, there are other types that can go horizontal when you need to fish wire in under a foundation. Landscaping companies can also use them to dig the holes needed to plant trees and other shrubs.

Buckets come with and without thumbs. When you're digging a deep hole, these are great. If there happen to be large rocks and boulders that cannot be easily moved, the thumb provides a way to pick the rock up and deposit it out of the way. By using the thumb, you avoid having to blast the rock, which requires a professional licensed blaster.
Compactors are used to prepare the ground for many things. They are often used to prepare the soil for laying a building foundation or building a road. Most think of the big rollers used to compact the asphalt in road construction but they ground below needs to be compacted or the crew will have a problem with sinkholes later on and have to redo the work.

Grapples are best for moving material. In some cases, you may have crates that need to be moved. The same style that is used in ports to empty ships can be used in smaller jobs in a warehouse. For scrap metal yards the grapple with teeth is used to pick up huge amounts of scrap and sort it quickly.

Hammers break through tough material quickly. Jackhammers are often used by road and construction workers. Having this as an accessory to the larger machines gives the advantage of breaking through walls or foundations that are too dangerous for a person to handle directly. Not only does it save the health of the person by reducing their stress and vibrations, but it also removes the person from the danger of the wall collapsing while they are working.
Rippers get through tough ground quickly and easily. These are great in areas that the ground is compacted or frozen but needs to be torn up at the beginning of the process. They are great at breaking up clay as well. They can be attached at the back or front and lowered into the soil and with the forward motion of the machine, they will tear the ground into manageable chunks that can be discarded, scooped, or otherwise reduced. For a new farming area, these will be the first step in the process of preparing the soil for planting season.

With the right tools, any job can be accomplished. If the job is big and needs to be done quickly, it is important to utilize the skills of the larger machine operators by supplying them with the right attachments to get the job done.
