How To Lower Your Heating Bill

by Hedrick Lepsch

We are halfway through winter and you have probably started to notice the high heating bill each month. To help you out with some extra cash and to get your house ready for next year. Here are seven tips to get you started.

Solar-Powered Robotic Lawn Mower If you have seen the battery powered vacuums that wander around the room cleaning up all by themselves you can take that a step further and have an auto lawn mower powered by the sun. A Swedish company created a robotic lawn mower that is partially powered by solar energy along with electricity that it takes on via charge.

It's estimated that for every degree that you lower your thermostat, you save around 3% on your next heating bill. However, make sure that you never turn off your thermostat while you are away. Doing so can sometimes cause pipes in the house to freeze and rupture, causing thousands of dollars in damages.

Take Advantage of Tax Breaks If you are thinking of getting involved in green technology now is the time to take advantage of the tax breaks which essentially serve as rebates. Green technology is continuously increasing in efficiency. Do a bit of research to see what would best suit you. Maybe you want to install some Helios 310 watt panelsd on your roof or you could also look into placing a cylinder wind turbine on the roof as well.

Make sure to caulk any gaps in your window frames in order to prevent this, or purchase super insulated windows if you can afford them. Once you have made sure the windows are secure, begin utilizing the sunlight that comes through them in order to heat your house. Keep track of which windows the sun hits throughout the day and make sure the blinds stay open in order to let the sunlight through.

Solar Stills For hundreds of years people have been using the sun's energy to distill salt water into fresh drinkable water and while we may not be drinking salt water on a boat or desert island there is still a lot of filthy water that individuals drink because they lack filtration devices. A solar still can do the job for them. Small solar stills have been developed that are light, compact, and reusable. The solar still can be used to gather water during the day to up to four points for no cost as it all relies on the sun. These work well in developing nations or even for military efforts in desert regions.

Solar Wi-Fi This is the classic solar power idea put to new use. The system works with by collecting energy, say through Helios 310 watt panels and then storing the energy in batteries for later use. While the system can be very costly to install, around $10,000 there is little to no maintenance required. The energy stored in the battery is used to create a Wi-Fi access point that reach a range of thirty miles pretty impressive.

Whatever you choose to do, remember that you do not have to continue paying massive amounts for a warm house.
