Before you do pack, decide whether you really need to take all that much. Could you make do with one bag between two people? Most cheap airlines offer great deals on flights, but it's easy to get stung by those extra hidden costs which pop up at the final minute - when you've already made your decision. So you inevitably accept all the extras.

Consider whether you need anything more than your free carry-on bags and one shared suitcase. The savings on your additional bag could cover the cost of a nice lunch on your holidays - or a round of cocktails!

Walking around your destination is a not only free way to get around local landmarks, but it's also an ideal way to get your bearings. Exploring can be a very enjoyable activity. For instance in Protaras Cyprus, the coastline is made up of crystal clear bays and the area is dotted with palm trees which just beg to be photographed. You'll find a gem of a beach at Fig Tree Bay, while at Cape Greco the cliffs offer stunning views. A lot of destinations even have local walking tours which cost nothing more than the price of a tip at the end. If you find one of these it's a worthy investment.

You'll want to discover more of the cultural attractions too. Here it's key to know which destinations are budget-friendly. Before you go do some research to see if there are any free museums or attractions close to your holiday resort.

Free museums will often not be as popular or as busy as their fee-charging counterparts, and you may find a gem you would otherwise have missed. And if you are going to pay for an entry fee, don't blow your budget on hype. Speak to locals and ask what sights they find the most interesting. It will rarely be the major tourist sights!
