Many people think of horticulture as a hobby that is soothing and therapeutic. Beginning gardeners need to know the answers to questions like when and what to plant, what type of soil is needed and what kind of gardening equipment they need to purchase. Read this article for some great gardening tips.

If your plants do not grown very tall, try buying some knee pads used for horticulture. Long hours tending your garden can leave your knees sore and achy. A set of quality knee pads designed for horticulture can be a world of relief for your central leg joints.

Soak seeds overnight, preferably in a cool, dark place. Soak the seeds by placing them in a container where they are covered with water. The seeds will get the hydration they need to start growing. The young plants will survive better, and get a boost toward maturity.

Plant your seeds carefully, taking your time. Make sure the soil is wet before you begin. Next, you will want to evenly distribute your seeds to ensure sufficient growing space. Place them at a soil depth that is triple the length of the seeds themselves. Some seeds require direct sunlight to grow, and these should be left on top of the soil.

Your vegetable garden should get at least six hours of sun daily. Many veggies require this amount to properly grow at a faster pace. Many flowers also require adequate sunlight to flourish.

You can get new plants from root cuttings. Cutting roots should be done in the winter while the plant is dormant. Use a knife to take the longest and thickest roots away from the plant. Divide the roots into vertical segments of about two inches. Fill seed trays with grit and moist peat, and gently lay the cut roots on the surface. Cover the cuttings with thin layers of grit and peat moss. Leave in a cool place, and in about a month you will have new seedlings. Plant them individually in little pots until they're ready to be placed outside.
Make new plants through root cuttings. Wait until winter when the roots are dormant before cutting them. Use the sharpest knife you have to take the thickest, longest roots available. Trim each root to a length of two inches. Fill a tray of seeds with grit and moist peat and put the cuttings of the roots on it. Place a light layer of the grit and peat mixture on top of it. Leave the tray in a cool area, and seedlings will sprout in approximately a month. Plant each seedling in its own small pot until it is developed enough to be transplanted outdoors.

Make sure you protect your knees well while you are gardening. Many people experience back pain and stiffness from bending over and working in the garden for extended amounts of time. Kneeling is much better for your back, and it will help you to tend to your plants with greater ease. Many types of gardening pads and cushions are available so that avid gardeners can kneel for longer periods of time without experiencing knee pain.

Plant seeds in pots that have a rich soil to give them a strong start. This increases the chance that your plants will survive to adulthood. It also lets you have tighter control over the planting periods in your garden. As soon as the mature plants are removed, you can replace them with fresh seedlings.

Pre-soak seeds overnight in a dark place. Use a small container filled with water to nearly the top and place several seeds in it. This hydrates your seeds and jump-starts their growth. Your seeds will then have the best chance possible to survive to maturity.

You can spray scents such as after-shave and cologne around your garden to deter your dog. This helps mask the attractive scents and can make your garden unappealing to them.

Gardening is a really great hobby for children, allowing them to bond with a parent. Kids love to pick out the plants and flowers you are going to plant in the garden. They think it is amazing to be given permission to get dirty and especially to get dirty together with their parents.

One method of gathering layers of materials for a compost pile is to simply stick the materials in bigger plastic garbage bags. This is best done after the leaves have been raked in the fall. Put your leaves in a plastic garbage bag in a warm area. When the spring season comes, you will be rewarded with the ideal soil material for your compost pile.

Research, hard work, and some dedication are the main requirements. All the work will be worthwhile, when you experience the satisfaction of a thriving garden established by your own effort.
