Taking a City Break in Aberdeen or Belfast

Although Aberdeen has a reputation for being dour and industrial, those who visit are often surprised to see it packed with green spaces and surrounded with natural beauty. In Johnston Gardens you can admire indigenous bulbs, heathers and alpines which border ponds full of comical Muscovy ducks.

For spectacular, untamed scenery and dazzlingly diverse wild flowers and birdlife, pay a visit to the Bullers of Buchan, a natural, circular chasm formed by collapsed cliff face. Journey out of the city to walk the Linn O'Dee, or, if the weather isn't on your side, head for the Duthie Park Winter Gardens, one of Europe's largest indoor gardens.

Northern Ireland's capital might have a population of just 600,000 (compared to London's 13 million) but Belfast is packed full of attractions that will appeal to all ages and interests. There is a fascinating industrial heritage in the city (it's the birthplace of the ill-fated Titanic), but it also lies close to some of the most beautiful scenery in Britain. The compact city centre is easy to explore, but a highlight is being within easy reach of the Giant's Causeway, a UNESCO World Heritage Site which is Northern Ireland's most popular tourist attraction.

If you're taking the little ones along then you'll find plenty to keep them busy in Belfast. The city parks, Sir Thomas and Lady Dixon park and the Cave Hill Country Park are the perfect place for them to run around and burn off excess energy before heading to W5. This exciting and interactive museum will introduce them to a new world of science and discovery. If you think they might be a little too young for that there's always the Fun Works Play Centre, which has a four-lane slide, crawl tubes, football and basketball to keep the children busy while you relax with a coffee.

So when you're thinking about planning your next short break, cut down your travel time and your carbon emissions and catch a train to one of these brilliant British cities. There's more to see than you'd ever imagined.
